Weird Finish on 10/22 Stainless
I picked up a 10/22 last Saturday that I had on order. Didn't take it out of the box at the store, but when I opened it up, I got a surprise. The finish on the stainless was a dull matte, completely different from the finish on my other SS 10/22 (7 years old), which is much brighter. Talked to my dealer today and he didn't seem to know what I was talking about. Not really complaining, as I got it for only $15 over the blued model, that I originally ordered, just curious. It almost looks like a Parkerized finish, but much lighter.
Anybody know what I'm taking about? |

Well, now you have one that will flash in the sunlight and reveal your location to every living thing...and one that will not.
Kudos! |

I'd be much happier that it came in a matte finish vs a polished.

Brushed Nickel plated maybe? I had a High Standard 22 pistol like that many moons ago. Bull barrel. Wish I'd never let that gun go.

I havent looked in a while - but burnished/brushed is an option now as is smooth/shiny stainless - think you got the one you wernt expecting to get.

Re: Weird Finish on 10/22 Stainless
I think that I read somewhere that they are using a "bead blasted" finish on their stainless steel. This would probably produce a matte-like finish.

Re: Weird Finish on 10/22 Stainless
I purchased a ss 10/22 last year and was also suprised. My only warning is that the matt finish does show marks easy. I.E. there will be a mark where the stock touches the barrel that you'll see when you break it down to clean.

It is bead blasted. It is an upgrade over basic SS for hunting purposes because it doesn't throw off a glare. I personally like the look more than regular SS.

Hey Ag, if ya don't mind, how much did it cost ya? I went the pawn shop route because of the plastic trigger reviews I'd read and wanted to get an older one.

Re: Weird Finish on 10/22 Stainless
There is a finish that involves an Acid Vapor. Its a dull finish that is somewhat popular on Stainless as it removes the reflection.

Re: Weird Finish on 10/22 Stainless
I'm pretty sure you are describing what they call a "target grey" finish. They have had it on some of their guns for years as well as certain distributor specials.

Re: Weird Finish on 10/22 Stainless
The finish is called "paint".
I have one of these new ones and an older one. I'd rather have 2 older ones. |

I might be done with Ruger as a company. This has left a very sour taste in my mouth. |
Re: Weird Finish on 10/22 Stainless
^^ yup - same reason I did not purchase one recently. I remember them being all metal and nicely finished. After reading and researching I decided to pass. Really disappointing that they do not even offer a high end one - as far as I could tell at the time.

Re: Weird Finish on 10/22 Stainless
You can find an older model at about any pawn shop or gun shop.
An older blued model 10/22 is better than a Marlin ... |
